Statement:
I like to imagine that time is a gel and suspended in that gel is everything that came before. In this fantasy we are on the surface and all of infinity is below. In this metaphor the difference in the time between now and the time of Lincoln’s assassination is minuscule, a celestial blink of an eye. The question I ask of this metaphor is what would happen if there was some sort of cosmic shift, and for one moment all past and present became fluid, and malleable. I think about this when I make my drawings. This most recent series started with a daguerreotype of Lincoln’s second Inauguration. Taken just weeks before the assassination, both Abraham Lincoln and his killer John Wilkes Booth are present in this picture. As the viewer I am the only participant that knows what is to come, and in that sense the image acts like a talisman or a crystal ball. This is the sentiment that I am trying to get at with these images. This is one of the central ideas that keep me rapt when researching and making this work.
